Will your tyres, brakes and servicing keep you safe this Christmas

I am sure like most people you don’t take much notice of your tyres until one goes flat or they need to be replaced.  But did you know that if you have a tyre maintenance plan and look after your tyres you will greatly increase the life of your tyres and you and your families safety on the road.

Humphrey’s Tyres and Air Conditioning on the Gold Coast is offering a special during November 2015 – $99 rotate, balance and wheel alignment on passenger vehicles and $118 for 4WD’s.

By doing a rotate, balance and wheel alignment every 10,000 km’s not only can you improve the life of your tyres but you can also increase your fuel consumption and overall vehicle performance including braking and your safety in the wet.

Tyres tend to wear unevenly – front tyres tend to wear on the outside edges because the tyre leans over when you go around corners, roundabouts etc whereas the rear tyres just follow the front so they tend to wear more evenly.  If you don’t rotate your tyres the front tyres will wear down quicker than the rear and you will have to replace the tyres thousands of kilometres before you should.

The other common cause is incorrect tyre pressures.  Running the correct tyre pressures is essential if you want to get the most out of your tyres.

tyre wear gold coast
You can see how your tyre wears prematurely with under inflated or over inflated tyres.

Under inflation is the major cause of blow outs and can also prematurely wear your tyres with uneven wear, heavy steering and increased fuel consumption and by over inflating your tyres may result in a rough ride, uneven wear and risk of tyre impact damage.

Your tyres will show you if you have been running the correct pressures. The most common fault is under inflation, which cannot only reduce your tyre life by 30%, yet also decrease your fuel consumption by 10%.

To alleviate this problem here at Humphrey’s Tyres and Air Conditioning, Southport we fill all our new tyres fitted with nitrogen – free of charge!   Nitrogen is a thicker molecule and does not leak out of the tyre as quickly as air.   Did you know if you are using air in your tyres you should check your tyre pressures monthly?   With Nitrogen you only have to check your pressures once every five to six months. Click here to find out more benefits of nitrogen.

Is it time to replace your brake pads?

Humphrey's Tyres Brake Pad Indicator

Do you hear a high-pitched screeching sound when you apply your brakes? That’s a small wear indicator giving you an audible warning that you need to replace your brake pads. If you hear it regularly, it’s time to come into Humphrey’s Tyres and Air Conditioning in Southport on the Gold Coast and have them checked by our professional mechanical team.

There is no doubt our roads on the Gold Coast are busier than ever before and with more cars on the road it is important to ensure all components of our vehicles especially the brakes are well maintained for our own safety and also the safety of our fellow drivers.

Hidden away, brakes are sometimes not thought of until we need them – normally that is when we slam them on to avoid an accident. Your vehicle’s brakes are one feature that should always be kept in top working condition and checked regularly during your log book service.

Watching out for the warning signs that indicate a need for a brake service or brake check can mean the difference between life and death on the road. There are two obvious signs that your brakes need servicing – the brake light appears or the feeling that your vehicle is taking longer to stop than it should.

Humphrey's Tyres Brake Pad diagram

Did you know that you can also check for wear by looking at your brake pads through the spaces between the wheel’s spokes. The outside pad will be pressed against a metal rotor. Generally, there should be at least 7mm of pad. If you see less than 7mm of pad, you may want to have your brake pads inspected or replaced.

Here are some other signs of brake problems. If you experience any of these, you should visit us as soon as possible.

Reduced responsiveness or fading. If your brakes are not as responsive as they should be or if the pedal “sinks” toward the floor, this could be an indication of a leak in the braking system. One sign to look out for is a small puddle of fluid when the car is parked.

Pulling. If your vehicle “pulls” to one side while braking, it may be a sign that the brake linings are wearing unevenly or that there is foreign matter in the brake fluid. Your vehicle may need a brake adjustment or to have the fluid drained and replaced.

Grinding or growling. This loud metallic sound indicates that you have worn down the pads completely, most likely beyond replacement. The grinding or growling noise is caused by the two pieces of metal (the disc and the caliper) rubbing together. This can “score,” or scratch your rotors, creating an uneven surface. If this happens, we will advise you if the rotors can be “machined” (a process that evens out the rotor surface), or if too damaged, they will need to be replaced.

Vibration. A vibration or pulsating brake pedal is often a symptom of warped rotors (but can also indicate that your vehicle is out of alignment). Warped rotors are caused by severe braking for long periods, such as when driving down a steep mountain or when towing. Tremendous amounts of friction are created under these conditions, heating up the rotors and causing them to warp. The vibration is felt because the brake pads are not able to grab the surface evenly. If you drive in these conditions, make sure to stop periodically to allow your brakes to cool off.

If you have any questions or queries about your brakes, brake pads, rotors or your vehicle in general please do not hesitate to contact us at Humphrey’s Tyres and Air Conditioning, 205 Nerang Street, Southport – your local tyre and auto servicing specialist on the Gold Coast.

Is your vehicle costing you – time to clean your fuel injectors

Is your vehicle costing you more to run? Have you noticed a decline in your vehicle’s fuel economy? Is your vehicle running at its peak performance? Would you like to save money, get better fuel economy and increased performance from your car?

If you said yes then it’s time to have your fuel injectors ultrasonically cleaned.

Symptoms that your fuel injectors need cleaning:

  • Has your car done more than 100,000 km’s?
  • Is your vehicle hard to start whether it is hot or cold?
  • Does your vehicle seem to use more fuel giving you poor fuel economy?
  • Has your vehicle lost its performance – loss of power?
  • Does your vehicle have uneven accelerating or shudders on accelerating?
  • Does your vehicle idle roughly, does it not run smooth at idle?

Over time carbon deposits form on the engine valves thus causing a decline in fuel economy and performance. Fuel additives won’t fix the situation because they only clean the fuel injectors and don’t clean off the carbon build up.

How does the Ultrasonic Injector Cleaning Process work?

  • Injectors are externally cleaned and visually inspected.
  • Injectors are tested for resistance, inductance, shorts and current draw.
  • Leak, spray pattern and flow rate tests are performed.
  • Ultrasonic cleaning process in ultrasonic cleaning tank
  • A high pressure back-flush is performed to remove any remaining particles.
  • Leak, spray pattern and flow rate tests are re-performed and recorded.
  • New filter baskets, o-rings and pintle caps are installed if applicable.

Why do I need a wheel alignment

When your wheels are aligned, your car handles better. Did you know that when your wheel alignment is out, your ability to drive safely is compromised. Imagine driving down the road with your wheels pointing the wrong way.

When your wheels are out of alignment, your tyres aren’t pointing in the right direction. This will affect your steering and suspension, but more importantly, it could affect your safety with upto 50% less grip on the road in the wet as well as you use more fuel. Sometimes it can be obvious when your wheel alignment is out – your car pulls to one side of the road (normally left) or your steering wheel has a vibration in it from balancing issues. In some cases, it can be subtle and you won’t even notice until you look at your tyres and notice they have worn on one edge.

That’s why it is recommended to rotate and balance your tyres and do a wheel alignment every 10,000 km’s. The better maintenance you keep, the better your car and tyres will perform. If your car alignment feels off – or if it’s simply been a while – come see us at Humphrey’s Tyres and Air Conditioning on the Gold Coast and our alignment experts will take a look.

We have the latest 3D four wheel alignment machine and hoist. After taking the car for a test drive to see how it drives we will put it on the four turn plate hoist and inspect the suspension and steering systems, including air pressure and tyre condition.   If you are running the pressures too high or too low it will affect the longevity of your tyres and can affect your wheel alignment. Sensors are then mounted onto all four wheels and an initial reading is given.   We then adjust the camber, caster and toe angles according to the manufacturer specifications. A final test drive is then carried out to ensure the steering wheel is straight and alignment is completed.

How do your wheels go out of alignment? It doesn’t take much – pot holes, running up or hitting the curb, bumping into concrete parking guides and normal wear and tear which is accelerated by low pressures. Over time a slight misalignment can cause a lot of uneven or premature tyre wear, alignment angles are measured in mm’s hence why it is so important to have your wheel alignments carried out on an accurate wheel alignment machine.

What happens if you don’t get your wheels aligned? Well it will ultimately end up costing you money because, without proper alignment, the life of your tyre is dramatically reduced and you use more fuel. You’ll most likely notice something’s wrong while you’re driving; your vehicle will probably not handle as well as it should and, in the most extreme cases, you could have a pretty difficult time maintaining control of the car.

If you aren’t sure if your wheel alignment is out come in and see us at Humphrey’s Tyres and Air Conditioning at Southport and we will perform a free tyre safety check and advise if your wheel alignment is out of alignment.

Radiator not performing – is it your Radiator cap

Don’t let your radiator fail this Summer!  Further on from my blog about radiators failing due to thermal shock I wanted to talk about one of the other common reasons why your radiator may fail – and it is simply the Radiator Cap.

So what does the radiator cap do?  Basically the radiator cap keeps the coolant level in the radiator at the desired amount.  The cap releases coolant to the over flow bottle, at a certain pressure, then draws it back as the engine cools, to maintain the correct coolant level.

What are some causes?  Cracked or swollen gasket, missing rubber seal, weak spring tension or it can be melted by heat.

The above causes can result in coolant leaking from the radiator, pressure not maintained or over pressure caused by fluid not being able to be passed to the over flow bottle.

A weak radiator cap, or the wrong one for the application, can allow excessive amounts of coolant to escape into the overflow reservoir when the engine gets hots.  Then prevents it from being siphoned back into the radiator as the engine cools leading to a low coolant level.

How can you prevent your radiator cap from failing?  When checking the coolant, also check the radiator cap for worn or cracked rubber gaskets.  If the cap does not seal properly, fluid will be lost and the engine will overheat.  A pressure test should be performed on your radiator cap to ensure it is working properly.

Maintenance of your radiator and the engine coolant is very important to prevent corrosion to the water pump, radiator hoses, engine and radiator, leading to fatigue of the component and failure.

Do you give your radiator its yearly or 10,000km radiator coolant power flush and refil?  At Humphrey’s Tyres in Southport we offer a $99 power flush for all passenger vehicles and $109 for all 4WD vehicles using quality Castrol coolant.  Flushing your cooling system yearly will remove contaminants deposited by your engine.

Don’t forget another great tip is never mix coolants as this can cause corrosion and leaks in your cooling system.

If you live on the Gold Coast come into Humphrey’s Tyres, 205 Nerang Road, Southport for your free cooling system pressure test and coolant glycol test.

Don’t let your Radiator fail this summer

There are six common reasons why your Radiator may fail – contamination, corrosion, pitting corrosion, electrolysis, thermal shock and the radiator cap. One of the most common reason your radiator may fail is due to Thermal Shock. (I will talk about the others in upcoming posts.)

Thermal Shock or Stress is caused by drastic differences in temperatures. What does that mean in simple terms?

Basically, there is a big difference in temperature when the hot and high pressure coolant from the engine surges into the cold inlet side of the radiator causing stress and fatigue to the radiator and in some cases cracking of the radiator or creating coolant leakage.

How can you prevent your radiator from failing?

Flushing your cooling system yearly as recommended by your vehicle manufacture will remove contaminants deposited by your engine, remove all the minerals in the water that cause corrosion in the engine and radiator, and prevent Thermal Shock, as well as greatly extending the life of the radiator, water pump and radiator hoses.

Maintenance of your radiator and its coolant is very important, any corrosion to the tube wall will accelerate tube fatigue. Have you serviced your radiator in the last year or 10,000km? Our radiator coolant power flush and Castrol coolant refill at Humphrey’s Tyres is only $99 for all passenger vehicles and $109 for all 4WD vehicles using quality Castrol coolant.

Don’t forget another great tip is never mix coolants as this can cause corrosion and leaks in your cooling system.
